It's important to learn the stages of rotting logs so you can keep the mountain clean and healthy. 

The first stage is a standing tree.  These trees are still healthy and strong.

Then the next stage is a snag. This is a standing dead tree. The way the tree becomes a snag is by insects, disease, fungi lightning, fire, or old age. The snag then falls to the ground and becomes a log.

Decomposers turn the log into frass. Frass is small wood fragments. Then the frass turns into humus. Humus is the top layer of the soil.

While the log is decomposing moss and plants grow on it. The soil is important to the forest because it helps the trees grow. The soil also holds the water in place while the tree drinks.
